The list has grown ALOT since I first started keeping track (over 9 years ago) which is great that more and more dog owners are concerned what they are feeding..... The Whole Dog Journal (the Consumer Reports of dog articles) is out with their yearly rating on dry dog food (kibble). The article that accompanies the list is excellent and explains thoroughly why some foods are chosen and why others are not. Some of the interesting facts are: - It is hard for many people to believe that dogs have NO carbohydrate requirements. - Carbs are inexpensive. - Upgrade your dog's food and you will notice he/she stops licking his feet, ear infections go away, anal glands don't require squeezing, eyes clear up and coat gets thicker and shinier. - If a food mixture contains more than 45% animal products goes through an extruder (kibble making machine) the machine literally gums up and grinds to a halt. Criteria for choosing the foods they did: - They look for foods that contain a lot of high quality animal proteins. - They reject any food containing meat by-products or poultry by-products. - They reject foods containing fat or protein not identified by species. (ie animal fat or meat meal...) - They look for the use of whole grains and vegetables. - They eliminate all foods with artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. - They eliminate all foods with added sweeteners. The store I bought the kibble from has a 100% guarantee. If your dog doesn't like the food you can bring it back. How cool is that. It looks like the Barking at the Moon I'm looking for is the High Protein, Low Carb version, and they didn't have that one. Maybe the store up near you has it.

I'd like the largest bag they have. I'll be there for training on Sunday and I can pay you for it then. If not I can check after training. I'll also bring the frozen chicken I have left for you to have. The reason I choose the Mmillenia Beef and Barley, was because it was the kibble that had only one ingredient that she was allergic to. The other products had multiple ingredients she was allergic to, and I figured that it would be better than feeding her straight chicken. Beside, I noticed the redness coming back on her neck and she started chewing on herself again, on top of the scratching. Anyways, thanks for your help with finding the right kibble for her. I've been thinking about doing a combination of the raw kibble and raw meat. Just haven't been too lucky finding any beef, lamb, rabbit, or venison for under $2.00/lb. If you happen to find some for cheap, please let me know.

Posts: 29 (09/08/07 11:02:43) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi, just wanted to chime in., i think there is 2 types of solid gold products in that list, since i used to feed my pack solid gold im familiar with a few,the basic adult line they have "hund-n-flocken" , is in the list, as well as the mmillenium the list kinda makes it seems like separate obscure companies or something , i know for a fact hund-n-flocken is solid gold product, i used the mmilennium beef, version a lil while , cant recall if it had two M;s tho. Currently im using Artemis Power formula, wich is made by a L.A, local shop, and no one else carries it but i have to say it is pretty awsome(for kibble) i dunno if u can order it direct but they wont be carried by any other "store"

He has been on Blackwood 2000 dry dog food the entire time I've had him. I don't see it on any lists, positive or negative. My vet did recommend Eagle Pak large breed puppy (on the approved list), but I have been reluctant to switch as the current food is what the breeder recommended. Any advice? www.blackwoodpetfood.com

Dogs do not need grains and Blackwoods appears to have quite a few. Also, "Meal" is not the best ingredient. Try to find a food with just "chicken" or "turkey", etc.......meaning the whole meat. Also I don't think dogs need beet pulp. I think Carla on the Dogo Board tried this food with not real good results. Your pup is a bit light but as others have said; "check the ribs"....that will tell you if your pup has enough weight. My dog Tianna was only 6 weeks and weighed 18 lbs. when I picked her up from RS. I remember this because she had to be under 20 lbs. to ride inside the airplane. Some pups are picky eating also.......and they do grow at different rates. All mine are raw fed and they do grow slower. My Tianna just turned 9 and has been 99 lbs. since she was 2.......good luck with your choice; you are smart to reseach it. On the other hand I have a young male (2 1/2) who is very active; eats 3 lbs. a day and I can't keep weight on him.....he is light for Presa standards. I am also very interested in the RAW food topic, so I will begin researching your DB for posts on that. If you have any pointers (what age to start) don't keep it a secret...ha. Thanks again.

I started raw over 10 years ago when I had a Rottweiler full of cancer. Don't worry I am more than happy to share any info I have regarding my experiences with raw. Each dog is different how they react to raw. My oldest girl only gets 12 oz. twice a day and she is 99 lbs. My heaviest is normally 105 and gets 3 lbs. per day so each dog metabolizes the food different. Eagle Pack is OK but still contains a good amount of grain and meal...... Reason is that kibble takes about 12 hrs. go through the system and raw takes about 3-4 hrs. Theory is that the kibble keeps the raw in the system longer than it should be and could cause problems. I would recommend giving one meal of GOOD kibble and a separate meal of raw. I feed pups 3 times a day until 6 months and then twice a day forever. Even some hamburger with cottage cheese/yogurt would be good or mix in some canned mackarel or sardines with the meat. Adding some beef heart is very good also; just don't make it the entire meal (too rich). Remember if you are not feeding a meat/bone mixture to add a teaspoon of egg shell to every pound of meat. I have a girl that had problems putting on weight always had runny stools etc so I took and had a blood allergy panels doe on her. She's allergic to corn, soy, turkey. chicken among a host of other things. I started off feeding nutro large breed, switched to nutro select or whatever the new holistic formula was and both were junk. I tried a couple foods after finding out about the allergies and the best food I have ever had her on is EVO's Red Meat made by nutura. That stuff is very expensive so I go half and half with Candidae's lamb and rice which had proven to be a great all around food but they just switched the recipe and I no longer like it. I tried a few other foods and settled on a product called Premium edge, and I use the lamb and rice formula. Taste of the wild was my other option. She's doing wonderful... Like the other gal mentioned, raw is a pain unless you are set up correctly for it. I also agree with cathy, feed one or the other per meal, it's not a good idea to mix kibble and raw in one feeding. I do kibble in the morning with cottage cheese, eggs etc which is quick and easy enough for me. I feed raw for dinner which is a custom made blend by some of my friends in southern california, it's chicken quarters, turkey necks, cod oil, cooked potatoes, celery, carrots...I also give my guys whole chichen quarters, turkey drumsticks, ground beef, and femur bones and cow rib bones on occasion. That all just depends on what the managers specials are at the local supermarkets lol...There has been some concern about feeding puppy kibble to pups, some think you should start with large breed adult from day one and some are conerned with raw. I've done it all. The first female I ever bough grew fast and was raised on just adult food. Her penn hip is .32 and .34...Next next girl vistoria (she has the allergies) was raised on puppy food til a year old. She was a slow grower but has the best hips of any of my dogs at .28 and .30. My large male had me concern as he grew very fast, he was 100 Lbs at 5 months and he has been raised on just raw. He should be done growing now, he's 28" tall and an easy 150 LBs and this isn't an exageration , he was 158 on his record for the penn hip. He's .38 and .40...I've been pretty fortunate. I have a 10 month old female now that seems to grow very slowly and she has been fed a mix of everything. I'll have her tested in a few months. BTW Cathy, it was very nice to meet you sunday, you've sparked my interest in weight pulling and getting more involved with the sport. I have a couple trainers now and hope to start doing personal protection and I have one prospect of my own from the same litter as Chad that I hope to Shutzhund. I hope your meeting went well, you have some nice looking dogs for sure...
